Just a week after Larry Birkhead publicly defended himself against unspecified though supposedly "explosive allegations" that cost him his exclusive make-nice deal with OK! magazine, the father of Dannielynn is again on the defensive, this time against salacious claims of a more detailed—and disturbing—nature.

In Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story Behind Anna Nicole Smith's Death, a new tell-all tome by former MSNBC talking head Rita Cosby released Tuesday, the cable-news pundit launches a series of potentially reputation-damaging allegations against both Birkhead and onetime paternity challenger Howard K. Stern—allegations against which Birkhead has already threatened legal action.

According to a statement released by the book's publisher, Hachette Book Group's Grand Central Publishing, the in-depth account of Smith's death and the players surrounding it will include revelations by Jackie Hatten, a woman who touted herself as Smith's best friend while making the media rounds in the wake of her death earlier this year, about the nature of the men's relationship.

Per a press release sent by Grand Central Publishing, "eyewitnesses say they were caught in a compromising position."

Lest readers worry that the tease is just that, the New York Daily News, which claimed to have received an early copy of the full tome, identified Hatten as the eyewitness.

"Their bodies were intermingled," she told Cosby in the book, adding that she caught the men shirtless and with their pants around their ankles in a Los Angeles home. "It was obvious what was happening."

Both Birkhead and a lawyer for Stern, who has kept a relatively low profile since the paternity battle played out last spring, have come out swinging, adamantly denying not only the same-sex allegations but a slew of other reports in Cosby's book.

"If she printed that, then she is really getting sued," Birkhead told the Daily News. "My attorneys are going after her, and that is absolutely false. And I am sure Howard and the estate and everyone else involved is going to sue her, too. This is just nonsense...None of it is true."

Stern's lawyer, Lin Wood, told the paper that Cosby's allegations were "false and defamatory" and that she "has taken the coverage to a disgusting new low, for which she will be held legally accountable."

Per Grand Publishing, which by now is likely good and lawyered up, Blonde Ambition will also delve into "private deals" hashed out between the two men and "how they cut a secret deal which was financially advantageous to both parties, without regard to little Dannielynn."

Cosby writes in the book that Stern was using a "secret" he learned about Birkhead against the Kentucky-born photographer to "suddenly cut a deal with Stern"—which included Birkhead getting custody of Dannielynn and Stern being named executor of Smith's estate—"and dramatically turn his back on Anna's mother, Virgie Arthur."

Cosby also alleges that not only did Smith have "no intention" of staying with Birkhead after getting pregnant by him but she called into question Birkhead's feelings for her, claiming his association with the former Playmate was "based on his desire for celebrity, not love."

Though while the book's publisher apparently has no problem throwing its weight behind the allegations by Cosby—who reportedly introduced Birkhead to his first and subsequently former lawyer Debra Opri—other media outlets aren't so keen on the association.

According to TMZ, Cosby scheduled appearance on Today this week to promote the book was nixed after the morning show received a legal warning from Wood that threatened to hold NBC responsible for any false utterances that emerged from Cosby during the sit-down.

Similar allegations are also reportedly set to hit the newsstand this week, with OK! magazine making good on last week's announcement that it has canceled an exclusive-coverage deal with Birkhead in the wake of "shocking and potentially incriminating" allegations the magazine claims to have unearthed.

"It makes it impossible for OK!, in good conscience, to promote this family's highly questionable relationship in our pages," the magazine said in a statement last week.

"It's unfortuntae," the mag's editor, Sarah Ivens, said, "but at the moment, my biggest fear is that Larry and Howard may have tricked us all."

Speaking to E! Online in the wake of the magazine's cryptic announcement, Birkhead called the rag's reaction "sour grapes" after OK! caught wind that rival tabloid Us Weekly had expressed interest in its exclusive cover subject.

Whatever the reason, Birkhead said he planned to file suit against the magazine for "alluding to the fact that I'd be involved in anything unethical or immoral with my daughter."

Dallas police spokesman Sgt. Gil Cerda has stated the girlfriend’s neighbor thought a burglar was attempting to break into the home and fired a shot through the door. The shooting happened at 4.m. on Monday. Albrecht, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting is under investigation, and no arrest have been made. It is unclear why Albrecht was at the house.

Albrecht joined New Bohemians in 1999. He was also a member of the Dallas rock band Sorta – where he played keyboard, guitar, and sang. Brad Pitt spoke of the joys of fatherhood today, describing it as “the most fun I’ve ever had”.

The Ocean’s Thirteen star said he was incredibly proud of his new film.

“This is a very complex and complicated film that isn’t part of the current zeitgeist of film-making – it’s more a throwback to some of the great films of the Seventies,” he said.

“I think it’s a delicious film, it sits and breathes like good wine, and it’s ultimately my favourite kind of film-making.”

The movie is one of the favourites to win the Golden Lion prize for best film.

Filmmaker Darabont Takes on `The Shield'

Filmmaker Frank Darabont of "The Shawshank Redemption" fame has been dazzled by "The Shield" since it began in 2002. He finally took action or more specifically, he shouted "Action!"

Invited by series creator Shawn Ryan to direct an episode of the dark and wrenching police drama, Darabont jumped in. His work on Tuesday's episode, "Chasing Ghosts," cemented Darabont's admiration for TV in general and "The Shield" in particular.

"It starts with the writing," Darabont said. "I've never seen a show that takes the kind of chances this one does. It's swinging for the fences all the time, and there's not been one iota of slacking in the tension and quality of the stories they're telling."

No big-screen snobbery here. As Darabont sees it, "some of the best stuff is being done on TV these days."

But the reality is that television and film production are vastly different.

A series can't offer an impressive budget or the kind of leisurely, 120-day shoot Darabont enjoyed on "The Green Mile." An episode of "The Shield" usually is allowed about seven days of filming.

And instead of realizing a personal vision, as he did directing his Academy Award-nominated adaptation of Stephen King's novella for "Shawshank," he has a series template for tone and character to follow.

Darabont, making a rare foray into TV, was fine with it all during his work late last summer on the FX series. He's downright enthusiastic about the relative lack of control.

"Coming in and putting myself at the service of somebody else's creative vision is wild and liberating. ... This is play time for me. And working with a unit this talented, this cast and this script, wow, talk about a safety net."

"I love playing in their sandbox and not trying to turn it into my sandbox," he said.

On a sweltering Los Angeles day, with Darabont and the cast and crew camped out in front of an apartment building for a scene in "Chasing Ghosts," the filmmaker was clearly in charge but far from overbearing.

"I seem to recall that on those lines you were off the curb, but maybe I'm losing it," he counsels series star Michael Chiklis. "Where it lands naturally is better. Let's do it one more time. .... And action! Please!"

The episode is pivotal in the story line unfolding this season.

"The Shield" is immersed in the aftermath of police Detective Curtis Lemansky's death and Strike Team leader Vic Mackey's (Chiklis) determined effort to find and destroy his killer who viewers know is fellow lawman Shane Vendrell.

There was a deliberate effort to give Darabont a particularly juicy script, said Adam E. Fierro, who co-wrote it with creator and executive producer Ryan.

The hour "includes a huge emotional payoff, something that has been building since last season, and we held it specifically" for Darabont, Fierro said, adding: "He's a great writer, and when you have a great writer reading your stuff you feel extra pressure."

Darabont slipped easily into the series' rapid-fire production rhythm, according to an admiring Chiklis.

"This is not a conventional shoot," Chiklis said. "It's really shot in a docudrama style oftentimes, we don't even lay marks (for the actors). It's raw and ugly. We do it fast and furious."

The nine to 10 script pages covered in a single day of shooting on "The Shield" represent at least a week's production on a film, the actor said. Darabont embraced the rush.

"He's been passionate since the moment he walked on the set, like a 15-year-old kid at a rock concert," Chiklis said. "He's been on fire the whole time. ... He's moved faster than anybody else. He's so definitive. He knows exactly what he wants."

Besides directing the pilot for the new Jeff Goldblum series "Raines," Darabont's TV experience includes a 1990 cable TV movie, "Buried Alive," and scripts for George Lucas' "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."

The first two features he wrote and directed, 1994's "Shawshank" and 1999's "The Green Mile" (also a King adaptation) received Oscar best-picture nods. He knows what he wants to pursue artistically "good, character-driven stuff" but worries about whether it's possible.

"Truth is, it's getting harder and harder in my line to get movies made. The studios are getting so ...." he searches for a word, then settles on "blockbusterish," a reference to big-budget movies that play it safe.

"Do I want to spend two years of my life making something I wouldn't want to spend two hours of my life watching? The answer is no," he said, adding, "I am convinced I couldn't make a `Shawshank' today."

The independent film route is a possibility, Darabont said. And he's adamant about directing his own screenplays; his latest projects include "The Mist," another King-based film that is planned for fall release, and "Fahrenheit 451."

"I just ran out of gas wanting to ever type `Fade in' for somebody else again. I decided to write for me. ... After 20 years of primarily being a screenwriter and having 20 years go by in a blur of deadlines, enough of that."

"I'm going to some fun with it."

McCartney scoops Classical Brit

The former Beatle saw off competition from artists including Sting, Katherine Jenkins, Alfie Boe and Bryn Terfel.

300 battles Pirates at MTV Awards

Sword and sandals epic 300 will go head to head with Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, Dead Man's Chest, at this year's MTV Movie Awards.

300 has earned five nominations to Pirates' four, with both films vying in the best movie, best villain and best performance categories.

Other contenders for best movie include ice skating comedy Blades of Glory, Little Miss Sunshine and Borat.

Comedian Sarah Silverman will host the annual awards in Los Angeles on 3 June.

It will be the first time the awards ceremony, which includes categories for best kiss and best fight, is broadcast live. Silverman, famous for her irreverent style, hosted the Independent Spirit Awards earlier this year.

Pirates stars Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley are both nominated in the best performance category, vying against 300's Gerard Butler, Will Smith for his role in The Pursuit of Happyness and Dreamgirls' Beyonce Knowles and Jennifer Hudson.

Potential award-winning villains include Pirates star Bill Nighy, 300's Rodrigo Santoro, Tobin Bell in Saw III, Jack Nicholson in The Departed and Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

British success

British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, whose hit film Borat earned three nominations, has been shortlisted in both the best kiss and the best fight categories.

The Borat creator is nominated for Borat's naked wrestling match with co-star Ken Davitian, and his kiss with Will Ferrell in Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

Baron Cohen is also nominated for best comedic performance, against Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and fellow Briton Emily Blunt.

Blunt, who was in The Devil Wears Prada, is also nominated in the best breakthrough performance category, but will face stiff competition from Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin and Jaden Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness.

They are joined on the shortlist by British actress Lena Headey, in 300, Stomp the Yard's Columbus Short and singer Justin Timberlake, in Alpha Dog.

'Disturbia' Earns $9.1M As Spidey Looms

Movie-goers continued to keep their eyes on the Peeping Tom thriller "Disturbia," which fended off a weak batch of newcomers to remain No. 1 for the third straight weekend with $9.1 million.

The movie business seemed to be on hold in anticipation of a huge summer that begins this week with Sony's "Spider-Man 3." The top-12 movies took in an anemic $62.9 million, down 30 percent from the same weekend last year, when "RV" was the No. 1 movie with $16.4 million.

DreamWorks and Paramount's "Disturbia," starring Shia LaBeouf as a house-bound teen whose surveillance of neighbors uncovers a killer, raised its total to $52.2 million after three weekends, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Disney's supernatural thriller "The Invisible" turned in the best performance among the weekend's ho-hum debuts, taking in $7.6 million to open at No. 2. The movie centers on a teen trying to solve his own murder while trapped in a nether zone between life and death.

Paramount's "Next," starring Nicolas Cage as a man whose ability to see into the future is exploited by federal agents trying to stop a terrorist nuclear attack, premiered at No. 3 with $7.2 million.

Lionsgate's "The Condemned," with wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin as one of 10 Death Row inmates dropped on an island to fight to the death for an Internet reality show, debuted in ninth-place with $4 million.

Yari Film Group's comedy "Kickin' It Old Skool," starring Jamie Kennedy as a man who wakes from a 20-year coma and tries to revive his break-dancing career, opened at No. 11 with $2.8 million.

Though movie attendance is up 1.2 percent so far this year compared to last, Hollywood has been in a lull in recent weeks as a huge crop of summer films looms, including Friday's premiere of "Spider-Man 3," followed closely by DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek the Third" and Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."

"I think people are just absolutely ready for a big summer movie," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "You can see by the box office over the last few weekends, they're ready, and it's been a long time coming. I do anticipate it's going to be an incredible weekend for us."

"Spider-Man" took in $114.8 million in its first weekend in 2002, a three-day opening that remained an all-time high until "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" set a new record last summer with $132 million.

In 2004, "Spider-Man 2" opened on a Wednesday before a long four-day Fourth of July weekend and took in a record $180.1 million in its first six days.

"This was an incredibly slow weekend. To have a top movie come in under $10 million just shows how the marketplace is in a holding pattern," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "It'll all be made up next weekend with `Spider-Man 3.'"

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

Portman Endorses Microloans for Women

Natalie Portman says that for many of the world's poorest women, a small loan can change their lives.

The actress said in an interview for ABC's "This Week" that aired Sunday that she has met mothers younger than she is who had to work in poor conditions for low pay because that was the only job available to them.

"And then they're able to get a loan and start their own business out of their own house and be with their children," Portman said. "It changes the whole system."

Portman, who starred in the last three "Star Wars" films, has been working with FINCA International, an organization that provides small loans to people in developing countries.

"If a woman can't tell her child, 'I can feed you tomorrow, I can pay for your school,' then where do they go? What do they do? What do they choose? It's really trying to reach the poorest of the poor and offering banking services to them," she said.

Trump Gives Donation to Schwarzenegger

Billionaire Donald Trump gave $10,000 to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to help pay off his campaign debts, a little more than a month after the governor guest-starred on Trump's TV show "The Apprentice: Los Angeles," according to a campaign filing.

In an episode that aired March 18, Schwarzenegger hosted five of the show's contestants in his private conference room at the state Capitol.

The governor denies any link between the donation and the television appearance, but some political watchdog groups are skeptical.

"He's clearly using his personal friendships and his celebrity to pay off his campaign debt, and that's just wrong," said Jamie Court, president of the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, a group that tracks campaign donations.

Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said the April 20 donation was not connected to the governor's appearance on the NBC prime-time show. The taping took place earlier in the year, but she was unsure of the date.

Trump could not be reached for comment Saturday at his company's headquarters in New York.

The donation was Trump's first to Schwarzenegger, whom he described as great friend when he told a group of contenders that they would meet California's governor as a reward for winning a competition. The show features Trump and contestants vying to work for him.

Legendary 'Hogzilla' to Hit Big Screen

Hogzilla, a near-mythical monster hog that roamed south Georgia, is about to get a little bigger. An independent filmmaker is producing a horror movie about the super swine called "The Legend of Hogzilla," and has even enlisted the beast's killer on the set as an adviser.

"He's our hog expert," producer Rick Trimm said of guide Chris Griffin, who shot the huge porker in 2004 at a hunting preserve.

Photographs of the hog hanging from a backhoe were sent around the world, and the town of Alapaha 180 miles south of Atlanta quickly adopted Hogzilla as its own, even launching a parade in the pig's honor.

A National Geographic team confirmed the pig's existence in 2005 after exhuming the behemoth's remains. While the experts said the hog didn't exactly live up to the hype local hunters said the pig was 12 feet long and weighed 1,000 pounds they still discovered a mighty big hog. They estimated it weighed around 800 pounds and was probably about 8 feet long.

Lithium Productions says the production will need 200 locals for extras and is hosting tryouts next month.

"We don't need professional actors," Trimm said. "We need real people who are interested in the movie."
